Blackjack-History

Blackjack is an exciting casino classic that has been around for centuries and is still enjoyed by millions of casino players. But have you ever wondered where it all began? And how the game evolved to become one of the most popular casino classics? Well, our article looks at the history of Blackjack and how it evolved. Keep reading!

The origins of Blackjack

The exact origins of several casino games UK. are shrouded in mystery. And the game of Blackjack is no exception to that. According to some historians, the game of Blackjack first appeared during the Romanian era. It’s believed that the Romans played the game using wooden blocks with engraved numbers. But there’s no clear evidence to support that.

The earliest written record of a card game like Blackjack can be found in a short story by a Spanish writer named Miguel de Cervantes. The tale, first published in 1613, includes two card counters trying their luck in Seville. The duo is an expert at cheating in a game called Veintiuna, the Spanish name for twenty-one. Like Blackjack Switch, Veintiuna aims to have a total point score of 21 without going bust. Also, the Ace card could be valued as either 1 or 11 here.

Another theory suggests that Blackjack first appeared in French brick-and-mortar gambling venues in the 1700s. The version of Blackjack played in French casinos of that time was called Vingt-et-un. The gameplay rules of Vingt-et-un were formed by combining the elements of several card games, including Veintiuna, Chemin de fer and Ferme. Interestingly, the card game Ferme was also responsible for the evolution of Baccarat, a popular casino classic at all the top mobile casinos like ours.

Soon after its advent, Vingt-et-un quickly became popular in several parts of France. It was a staple at the Royal Court during King Louis XV’s reign. Also, the rising prominence of Vingt-et-un resulted in numerous alternative versions of Vingt-et-un in Europe. Some of them included Quinze, Trente-Un and Sette e Mezzo.

The birth of Classic Blackjack

In the 1700s, the French colonists took the game of twenty-one to North America. And it took no time for the game to become popular in the U.S. By 1820, it could be found in numerous gambling halls in New Orleans.

Eleanor Dumont, a French colonist believed to have immigrated to the U.S. in the mid-19th century, was largely responsible for the nationwide appeal of twenty-one. A proficient dealer, Dumont started a gambling hall called ‘Vingt-et-un’ in Nevada City. This quickly led to her being known as the “woman dealer”, which further resulted in people from around the world visiting her gambling venue.

The game of twenty-one continued to grow in popularity in the 20th century and developed into what we know as Blackjack today. The point at which the name of the game was changed from twenty-one to Blackjack is still being determined. But it’s thought that the name came up during World War I when gambling venues offered an exciting bonus reward for players whose initial hand consisted of the Ace of spades and a ‘black’ Jack. In other words, the game aimed to have a ‘black Jack’.

The introduction of Blackjack strategies

The game of Blackjack rose to prominence in the 20th century. However, it was still a game of chance for many players. Of course, it is. But it’s also possible for players to use betting strategies that keep the house edge to its minimum and hopefully improve their winning chances.

The first attempt to create an optimal Blackjack playing system was made in the 1950s by a group of four men, also known as the ‘Four Horsemen of Aberdeen’. The paper, titled The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack, soon led to the development of numerous strategies that offered players the best chances of winning.

Amongst the various betting systems devised in the 20th century, a betting strategy created by American mathematician Ed Thorp is highly popular. For players who want to know how the betting strategy works, a detailed breakdown can be found in Throp’s book titled Beat the Dealer.Besides, the book explains what card counting in Blackjack is and how one can use it at land-based Blackjack tables. And if you don’t have enough time to go through the book, you can take the help of a Blackjack calculator that shows the best move for each hand.

Blackjack in the 21st century

Blackjack has remained a popular casino classic into the 21st century. The widespread prominence of Blackjack can be attributed to online casinos, allowing players to enjoy it online from the comfort of their homes.

Also, unlike their land-based counterparts, online gambling venues have many different Blackjack variations, including Blackjack Atlantic City Blackjack, Double Exposure Blackjack, Progressive Blackjack, Spanish 21 and Blackjack Switch.

Online casinos offer live Blackjack games for players who want to experience the thrills of land-based Blackjack without travelling anywhere. The gaming action at live Blackjack tables takes place in a physical studio and is streamed onto the player’s device in real time.

Also, several other things, such as the presence of a human dealer, the ability to switch between different camera angles and the availability of the live chat option, make for a highly realistic Blackjack experience. Indeed, the game of Blackjack has come a long way!
