Roulette call bets basics

Also referred to as French bets, call bets are special wagers usually offered in European and French Roulette types. At land-based Roulette tables, players place Call bets by calling what they wish to wager.

This is somewhat different than making the standard bets where players directly place the Roulette chips on the Roulette table itself. In the case of online and live Roulette games, players can find dedicated buttons to place Call bets. This makes it easier for players to place specific types of call bets.

The different Roulette call bet types listed

Now that you know the basics of Roulette call bets, let’s have a look at the different call wager types you can choose to place at Roulette tables:

Voisins du Zero

This is one of the most popular Roulette call bets. It translates to “Neighbours of Zero” in English and covers seventeen pockets between numbers 22 and 25 on the Roulette wheel. 

The numbers are as follows – 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, and 25. Note that this call bet can only be placed in Roulette games that use the European wheel.

This is because the numbers surrounding the zero slot on the American wheel follow a different order.

To make the Voisins du Zero bet, you need nine chips. First, a single chip is placed on each of the five splits – 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22, and 32/35. Two chips are placed as a split wager on the 1, 2, and 3 trio. The remaining two chips are then placed as a corner wager, covering the following numbers – 25, 26, 28, and 29.

Jue Zero or Zero Game

This is another widely placed Roulette call bet. But interestingly, this call wager wasn’t developed in France. A careful analysis of Roulette history reveals that it first originated in German casino houses, where it was known as Zero Spiel.

Jue Zero call bet covers a total of seven numbers that are located the closest to the single-zero slot on the Roulette wheel. They include – 2, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, and 15. 

Unlike the Voisins du Zero bets, players need only four chips to place this wager. One chip is placed on the following three splits: 0-3, 12-15, and 32-35. The last chip is placed as a straight-up wager on the number 26.

Tiers du Cylindre

Translating to “Third of the Wheel” in English, this call wager is commonly found in Roulette tournaments. As the name implies, Tiers du Cylindre covers one-third of the Roulette wheel. The Roulette wheel section covered by this bet includes 33 and 27: 27,13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, and 33.

Tiers du Cylindre requires players to wager six chips in total. These chips are then placed on the following six splits – 5-8, 10-11, 13-16, 23-24, 27-30, and 33-36. In some Roulette books, Tiers du Cylindre is called the small series bet.

Orphelins

Orphelins is also known as Orphans at some new casino sites. This call bet includes two sections of numbers on the Roulette wheel that Voisins and Tiers do not cover. The first three numbers (17, 34, and 6) are positioned on the right of the single zero slots. The remaining five numbers (1, 20, 14, 31, and 9) are on the zero pocket’s right side.

As a player, you need five chips to place the Orphelins bet. The first four chips are placed on the following splits: 31-34, 17-20, 14-17, and 6-9. The last chip is wagered as a straight-up bet on the number 1 pocket. The potential payout for the call bet can be between 17:1 to 35:1.

Neighbour bets

The functioning of this call wager is not as straightforward as the Roulette inside bets or other call bets mentioned on our list. And this is one of the reasons why many players avoid placing it. But the Neighbour bet can be an interesting call wager to place once you get the hang of it.

The player must select a number on the Roulette wheel when placing this call bet. Then two numbers each on the right and left sides of that chosen number are taken. That way, the Neighbour bet covers a total of five numbers. The potential payout here can be as high as 35x your stake.
